So, it's post-breakfast, and my kids are playing happily on the kitchen floor while I type this at the kitchen table. They are playing on the floor with toys from a bottom kitchen drawer that they can reach and unload everyday. Sometimes I think it is genius to have toys in the kitchen. And sometimes they are the bane of my existence. Because now the children have run off to do other things, and the toys remain scattered all over the floor. I spend a lot of time in the kitchen, so I'm stepping over tiny toys all freaking day.
The point of this post is to ask you: Do you have toy policies or rules? Do you keep toys in weird places?
I have a no toy policy in my kitchen because it's "MY" space. But also because our kitchen is small and it's not a walk through, so one way in and one way out.
ReplyDeleteMy only other toy policy is at the end of the day, they must all be put away and the boys must do it.
I do have a weird place though. The boys like to hang out in my room while I get ready in my bathroom (they are connected) so I have a random box of toys on the bottom of my bookshelf.
One of our drawers in the kitchen is dedicated to G's toys. Now that he's walking, though, the drawer above it has become suspiciously empty.
ReplyDeleteI try to keep toys contained. In his room, they're in drawers in his shelving. In the living room, two shelves of a small bookcase are dedicated to his books and toys. Kitchen has the one drawer. And, because he's enjoyed "helping" with laundry as I put clothes away, one drawer in our dresser in our room has miscellaneous unmatched socks and a toy or two for him.
I WAS doing a good job of picking up with him in my arms before nap time or bedtime, to get him used to the idea that they get picked up before we leave a room, but that has gone by the wayside. I think I'll do it again, though, since he's imitating much more!
My mom does the kitchen drawer for kids toys. She never did when I was a kid though. I do not have that but maybe I should... I do not like toys in the kitchen, I just end up tripping on them or kicking them around. Hyrum likes to be in the kitchen with me and I am always trying to strike a balance between him helping and actually feeling sane while I make a meal.
